Only those with recitative were given at the Opéra, while dialogue was permitted only in the Opéra-Comique. The distinction rested in the convention of including recitative (sung dialogue) in some operas, while others utilized spoken dialogue (much like operetta or musical theater). The latter did not exclusively present comedies, nor did the former offer only serious subjects. The two leading opera houses were the Opéra and the Opéra-Comique.
